Elgin Museum
Possibly the oldest independent museum in Scotland. Established in 1836, with the purpose built museum opening in 1842, the Italianate style building is home to over 36,000 items and features ever changing exhibitions.
Exhibitions this year include:
'Home
and Away' our Homecoming year exhibition showing items and telling
stories of Moray exiles who went abroad to help build the British
Empire in the mid and late 19th century. Featured are some of the
artefacts which they sent home to amaze their friends and families back
home in Moray.
'People and Place' features a thousand years of Scottish History from a Moray perspective.
A fossil collection which has just achieved 'Recognition' signifying a collection of national importance.
A Roman hoard and other artefacts unearthed locally with new items added from the 2008 dig.
'Victoriana'
an exhibition of items from Victorian times with accounts of people who
helped to build Moray and Elgin in the late 19th century.
